Dearest A-Team,
How’s it chillin’?
That is what my nine-year-old asks, from time to time, in the event that he is curious about other people. I thought I would put it to you.
He does not wait for me to answer, but I will accept responses and respond in kind. So?
What? Oh! How’s it chillin’ with me? Thanks for asking! All is well, not least because I believe deeply in this Tuesday’s Composition@Carleton showcase, also known as a “recital,” “concert,” “show,” “jury,” or “rutabaga.”
(Rutabagas, amirite? What even are they? Thanks for asking!)
Regarding the showcase, there will be, as they say, something for everyone, including (and limited to):
Recordings of our full orchestra reading new student work!
Sample-based electronic music!
Structured improvisation!
New works for piano solo performed by my colleague Nikki Melville!
All joking about produce aside, guiding students through this work has been deeply meaningful to me. Much of my day consists of imagining how I might be of greatest use to young people who have, for whatever reason, turned to this process and invested themselves in it. The least I can do, at this point, is invite my friends into the hall:
Tuesday, 11/14, 7pm, Kracum Performance Hall at the Weitz Center for Creativity. I’d love for you to come.
I will now field any questions, including but this time not limited to:
how’s it chillin’?
could you tell me that important thing you forgot to say in this email you are currently writing that I really need to know in order to attend this concert?
are you secretly working on a big thing that you are dying to talk about?
you know you invited us to your last thing by responding to an email with the subject line CANCELED?
do you think it’s a good idea to end on the word CANCELED if you want people to come to this event that is decidedly not canceled?
Hope to see you—
A
PS I really do want to know how it’s chillin’.
